How this is calculated

  1. EPF: the employee contributes 8% and the employer 12% of monthly earnings, remitted together as 20% to the EPF by the last working day of the following month.
  2. ETF: the employer alone contributes 3% of the same earnings to the Employees' Trust Fund. Nothing is deducted from the employee.
  3. Earnings liable: basic salary plus cost-of-living, fixed allowances and any payment for work done. Overtime, bonuses and travelling reimbursements are generally excluded.

Frequently asked questions

Is EPF deducted on overtime?
No. Overtime is not part of the earnings on which EPF and ETF are calculated. Basic salary, cost-of-living allowance and other fixed allowances are.
What is the total EPF and ETF cost to an employer?
15% of liable earnings: 12% EPF plus 3% ETF. The employee's 8% is deducted from salary, not an employer cost.
When are EPF and ETF due?
Both must reach the funds by the last working day of the month following the month the salary relates to. Late payment attracts a surcharge.
